Think Wine, Think Romance, Think You!
If you were a wine, which one would you be? We’ve all done personality tests that determine all kinds of interesting information about how we socialize, think and process our surroundings and social contacts. Just for fun lets ask “What is your romantic personality based on your wine preferences”. Really now, lets admit it, don’t most wine descriptions in wine publications and wine menus read like dating profiles for personal column ads or a online dating services. Who hasn’t read the following “dark and complex personality with a hint of spicy mystery” and thought, don’t I know him? Wasn’t he the dark haired, brooding swarthy guy in High School all the girls liked but never got to date because he always had a college girlfriend! That’s my point, I think it should be easy to make the leap forward to describing our romantic personalities as wines and it will make us all sound more interesting too. Let’s get started!
Wines come in reds, whites, rose/blushes, sparkling (champagne) and dessert styles. I’ll describe them each in the most romantic way possible and you decide which best suits your romantic personality.
The Reds– earthy, bold, dark, spicy with a hint of smoke and berry tones that leave a lingering taste that always sparks a fond memory when savored. Wow, sexy! Who are these reds; Malbec, Amaron, Ripasso, Petit Syrah, Pinot Noir, Baco Noir, Shiraz, Cabernet, Merlot, Old vine Zinfandel, Chambourcin, Norton, Marchel Foch and Frontenac just to name a few you might be partial to if you’re a RED wine person.
The Whites– sometimes sweet, sometimes dry or nutty but always bright, citrusy, lightly fruity and fresh with floral undertones that scream for attention and say pick me, pick me and leave you thirsty for more. These whites are Chardonnay, Chardonel, Pinot Gringo, Muscat, Riesling, Seyval Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Traminette, Vidal Blanc, Cayuga, Vignoles and Vigonier just to name a few you will enjoy as a WHITE wine person.
The Rose or Blushes– often a blend of flavors that are light and hard to pin down with hinted at tones, usually fruity, sweet and just easy on the tongue to relish on a hot, sultry day. White Zinfandel is the best known and most popular blush and many blushes/rose wines are made by blending the dark red characteristics with the lighter white wine tones. Blushes take just a little color off the skin of a dark grape to add a little pink to their palette just like a true BLUSH person adds a little color to the world.
The Sparkling Wines– popping on your tongue like the Fourth of July, start the party and uncork your inhibitions, always bright, sometimes fruity, mostly sweet and always sassy. You know who you are baby! Moscato is often used in Asti sparkling wines, Prosecco in Italian Spumante and many other varietals too. If you’re a SPARKLING TYPE you need to treat yourself to one of the best; Tattinger, Cristal or Dom Perignon when you’ve got a little change to spare. Dessert Wines- higher in octane then your friends, you come out bold and sweet from the start and stay long after the others have gone home. Some dessert wine favorites are; Ice Wine, Madeira, Port and Sherry.
These can be made with many different varietals and therefore have many personalities, but are always a treat to have around, just like a DESSERT wine person.
